The Football League has announced that Oldham Athletic player Dean Furman has won the Mitre Goal of the Year Award at the 2011 Football League Awards. Furman received the award at the gala ceremony at The Brewery, London, on Sunday evening in front of guests from clubs, sponsors and the football industry. This year there were a total of 17 awards with a total of 34 clubs shortlisted for honours.
During the 2010 calendar year, no fewer than 5043 goals were scored in Football League competitions. Each Football League club was asked to nominate their club's best goal from the 2010 calendar year. In conjunction with the presenters and viewers of Sky Sports’ Soccer AM these have then been narrowed down to a shortlist of five contenders. The overall winner was decided on the night by attendee votes.
On winning his award Furman said, "It was nice to finish off a great team move and the award is for the whole team really, I was just lucky to be the one on the end of it. I think that the goal shows that there is some good quality football played in the lower leagues."
Greg Clarke, the Chairman of The Football League, said: "The Football League Awards 2011 has given us the chance to recognise and reward the achievements of those on and off the pitch. The evening has been another huge success, and I congratulate all the winners."
