Wolverhampton Wanderers’ striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake scooped the coveted Mitre Goal of the Year award at the 2009 Football League Awards incorporating FourFourTwo’s Top 50 Football League Players.
The announcement was made at a gala dinner at Grosvenor House, Park Lane on Sunday evening in front of more than 800 attendees from clubs, sponsors and the football industry.
Ebanks-Blake’s winning goal was chosen from a shortlist of five and came in the 15th minute of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ game against Charlton Athletic on 29th March 2008. Ebanks-Blake controlled a low cross on the turn before firing a brilliantly executed left-foot shot past Charlton keeper Nicky Weaver from the edge of the box.
The 23 year-old striker also received the FourFourTwo Player of the Year for the Coca-Cola Championship accolade. Ebanks-Blake was ranked top in the FourFourTwo Top 50 Football League Players, making him the highest ranked Championship representative.
Cambridge born Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is in his second season at Molineux, after signing from Plymouth Argyle, and has led Wolves’ promotion challenge from the front by hitting 24 goals in 38 appearances – making him the Coca-Cola Championship’s leading scorer.
Nicki Lesirge, marketing manager at Mitre said: “Once again the Mitre Goal of the Year category was a competitive shortlist of impressive goals. By supporting this award we are pleased to both celebrate the talent we have seen throughout the season and continue our close relationship with the Football League.”
Commenting on the 2009 Football League Awards, Football League Chairman, Lord Mawhinney, said: "Once again, these awards have given us the opportunity to honour those individuals whose commitment to the game, their club or local community goes beyond the call of duty.
"The fourth Football League Awards has been an enormous success, and I congratulate all the winners on their achievements."
