Winner of Mitre Goal of the Year

31/03/2010

Nicky Maynard has won the Mitre Goal of the Year award in association with Soccer AM at the 2010 Football League Awards incorporating FourFourTwo's Top 50 Football League Players.

The striker received the award at a gala dinner at Grosvenor House, Park Lane on Sunday evening in front of 900 attendees from clubs, sponsors and the football industry.

The forward's effort against Queens Park Rangers was voted as the best goal of the 2009 calendar year by attendees at the event, from a shortlist chosen by viewers of Sky Sports' Soccer AM.

Maynard's amazing volley was a late Christmas present for Bristol City fans, coming in their Boxing Day match at Loftus Road. With his back towards goal, City's top scorer took two touches before arrowing a scissor-kick into the top corner.

On collecting the award, Maynard said: "I haven't won a lot of awards so far in my career so I'm absolutely delighted to win this. The goal was probably the best of my career and it's great to get this sort of accolade. It was the last goal I scored though, and my aim at the start of the season was 20 and I'm stuck on 11 - so hopefully after getting the award I can start scoring on a regular basis again."
